President Trump announced plans to drain the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool shortly after the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, blaming criminals for damaging the pool’s lining and creating algae issues. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “The Reflecting Pool is now in full use after suffering great damage from Criminal, Radical Left Vandals, people that truly hate our Country.”
He promised that following the July 4 celebrations, water will be drained to treat the damage, declaring that the pool would eventually return to “perfect shape.” In his update, Trump reported that the pool was currently operating well, as the “criminally made algae” had been addressed and that efforts were underway to replace the damaged grass surrounding the site.
This spring, the Trump administration spent nearly $15 million on renovations aimed at revitalizing the Reflecting Pool, including a new blue lining designed to resist algae growth. However, issues recurred, with a significant algal bloom and peeling paint observed in recent weeks. Both Trump and the National Park Service have accused vandals of cutting the pool’s protective lining with sharp instruments.
In his recent statements, Trump also discussed plans for the East Potomac Golf Links, which he criticized as “dilapidated, worn out, and very dangerous.” He proposed constructing “one of the Greatest Golf Courses anywhere in the World” at the site, offering views of Washington’s monuments while ensuring it’ll be accessible to the public.
These developments are part of a broader series of renovation initiatives Trump has pursued during his second term, including the contentious addition of a ballroom at the White House after demolishing the East Wing.
