AMARILLO, Texas — A new project called “Project Matador” is being built in the Texas Panhandle and is expected to become the largest data center in the United States.
The project is owned and developed by a company called Fermi Infrastructure. It is being built to support artificial intelligence systems, including tools that learn and process large amounts of data.
The size of the project is one of its biggest features. The site covers about 6,000 acres of land, which is equal to about 9.4 square miles. When finished, the buildings could total around 18 million square feet.
The data center will need a large amount of electricity to run. At peak use, it could require up to 11 gigawatts of power. That is enough electricity to power millions of homes. The energy is expected to come from a mix of natural gas, nuclear power, and renewable sources.
Cooling the equipment is also a major part of the project. The site is expected to use about 2.5 million gallons of water each day to keep systems from overheating.
Construction is still in the early stages. Workers are preparing the land and installing basic infrastructure like power and water lines.
The project is expected to create thousands of temporary construction jobs. Once the site is fully running, it may employ hundreds of full-time workers, including technicians, engineers, and security staff.
There are also ongoing discussions about how the project will affect local resources, including energy use and water supply.
