In a rural neighborhood of Orange, Texas, millions of honeybees escaped after a semitrailer carrying approximately 400 beehives overturned on June 21, 2026. Emergency officials promptly closed local roads and advised residents to remain indoors while crews worked to offload the trailer and salvage as many hives as possible. Orange County is located east of Houston and shares a border with Louisiana.
There were no reports of bee stings or serious injuries due to the incident. The owner of the hives has not been identified. Christie Ray, who operates the nearby Queen Bee Supply, noted that volunteers from several local beekeeping businesses arrived to assist with the situation. "They just help each other, that's what they do," she commented, praising the community spirit among beekeepers.
Chris Moore, the owner of Moore Honey, participated in the recovery efforts with his son and employees. He estimated that only about a quarter of the 408 hives had a chance of survival, primarily depending on the number of queens that remained alive after the crash. Moore highlighted the significant financial impact such a loss could have on a beekeeping business, stating, "It's a big loss. Any time you lose that many in one shot, it's a big loss."
The hives involved in the accident had only traveled a few miles toward North Dakota when the truck driver mistakenly took a wrong turn into a neighborhood with narrow roads, leading to the rollover. Local beekeepers have set out catch boxes in an attempt to collect stray bees, although it is anticipated that it may take time for the area to be cleared of the insects.
