DEMOCRAT MATT DUNLAP WINS MAIN PRIMARY

Matt Dunlap has emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Maine's 2nd Congressional District after three rounds of ranked-choice voting, as confirmed by the state's Secretary of State's office on June 22, 2026. This was a crucial contest for Democrats aiming to retain the seat in a district that President Trump won in the last three presidential elections. Although State Senator Joe Baldacci initially led in the first two rounds, Dunlap gained momentum after the elimination of challengers Paige Loud and Jordan Wood.

The retirement of Democratic Representative Jared Golden, who served four terms, poses a significant challenge for the party in their pursuit of regaining the House majority. In the 2024 election, Golden managed to secure a win in a Trump-leaning district, but his lack of endorsement for Kamala Harris and votes aligning with Republicans on key issues have sparked concern among party members.

Dunlap, the state's auditor, will face off against Republican Paul LePage in the general election set for November. LePage, a former two-term governor, ran unopposed in the GOP primary and reportedly had $1.2 million in cash on hand as of May 20, compared to Dunlap's less than $100,000, according to Federal Election Commission data.
·
This primary victory is seen as a setback for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which had endorsed Baldacci, citing his remarkable electoral history. Baldacci ultimately finished as the runner-up in the ranked-choice voting process, with results disclosed 10 days post-election.
